Mr Stubbs is a professional and competent but costly builder. Sybil prefers him over Mr O'Reilly. Sybil asked Stubbs to come over and inspect a few doors. When he arrived however, the work had already been done. After realizing Mr O'Reilly had used woods for the supporting wall which wasn't strong enough, he rushes to find screwjack to stabilize the wall before the entire hotel collapses while calling his men from his company to make emergency repair work and mocking O’Reily’s lousy work.
The character name of "Mr. Stubbs" was used in recognition of Una Stubbs's father, Clarence, who was a builder. It was he who helped out John Cleese/Connie Booth when they needed to use technical terminology from the building trade as part of the script.
